Since the 1950s, WKCR has presented American music programming to its listeners, making it one of the oldest departments at the station. Today, WKCR honors that broadcasting tradition by providing an alternative to the other types of American music found on the radio. We aim to bring a comprehensive selection of blues, gospel, bluegrass, funk & soul, country, folk, and hip-hop to the airwaves, exploring each genre from its foundations to its present form. The American department also sponsors special festivals throughout the year, which preempt regularly scheduled shows for several days. We most frequently organize a country festival, though we have also put on blues and funk & soul festivals. While the focus of these festivals change, we always try to present each in a unique and informed way.
