December of 2014 saw the North American premiere of Petr Kotik's first opera, Master-Pieces. Founder of the S.E.M Ensemble, the Czech composer speaks with director Michael Rau about his first foray into composing for the stage, his thoughs on drama, and his fascination with Gertrude Stein's texts. Stepan Atamian conducted this interview on December 7, 2014 at WKCR.

Pablo Heras-Casado (NY Phil Biennial)

An interview broadcast on Cereal Music on Thursday, May 29th, 2014 with Pablo Heras-Casado, principal conductor of the Orchestra of St. Luke's. He joined WKCR for an interview about his performances on May 31st and June 1st for the New York Philharmonic Biennial, during which he led the Orchestra of St. Luke's in two programs titled Circles of Influence: Boulez and Benjamin.

The Westerlies

The Westerlies The Westerlies are a New York based brass quartet comprised of four friends from Seattle, Washington. Avid explorers of cross-genre territory, The Westerlies are a collectively run ensemble dedicated to the cultivation of a new brass quartet repertoire that exists in the ever-narrowing gap between American folk music, jazz, classical, and indie rock. The Westerlies have premiered over 40 original works for brass quartet since their inception in 2011, and crafted an approach that Dave Douglas had described as “Swinging, grooving, clean and tricky playing.

JACK Quartet

An interview broadcast on Cereal Music on Tuesday, March 18th with two members of the JACK string quartet, violinist Ari Streisfeld and violist John Pickford Richards. The recipient of New Music USA's 2013 Trailblazer Award, the quartet has performed to critical acclaim at venues across the globe, from New York to the Netherlands to Indonesia.

Mari Kimura

Interview with violinist and composer Mari Kimura. She is a specialist in violin subharmonics — credited with "discovering" and mastering the technique for use in performance — and is a pioneer in interactive computer music. Kimura has completed violin studies at the Toho School, Japan's top conservatory; Boston University; and the Juilliard School, and has studied composition with Mario Davidovsky at Columbia University.
