Award Recognition

Principled Action
Othmane El Houssi SEAS’26 is a dual-degree student who studied computer science at Columbia Engineering and mathematics and physics at Wesleyan University. He is being recognized for his commitment to principled action, demonstrating ethical decision-making, integrity, and compassion in both academic and extracurricular settings. As an RA at both Columbia and Wesleyan for three years, he has supported more than 100 students through mentorship and advocacy while working to build safe and welcoming communities. He has organized programs focused on well-being and academic success, and has contributed to campus policy discussions through his role on the Residential Life Committee. Beyond residential life, El Houssi has demonstrated a commitment to community-building and access. As co-founder of the Arab Student Association at Wesleyan, he led efforts to create an inclusive cultural space on campus, securing major funding and organizing large-scale events that brought together students, faculty, and their families. His service extends to volunteering in New York City, as well as academic roles that make knowledge more accessible, including assisting with physics instruction and research and preserving archival materials for future scholars through his work at the The Li Lu Law Library and at Wesleyan’s Special Collections and Archives. After graduation, Othmane will work in Boston; he hopes to later pursue graduate study and research in mathematics or computer science.
“Thank you to my family, friends, and mentors, who supported my journey and made these opportunities possible. As an international student, I feel lucky to be here and to have the perspective to appreciate these experiences. The best way I know to say thank you is to give back by supporting my community, showing up for others, and helping wherever I can.”
