Zvi Galil Award for Improvement in Engineering Student Life
The Columbia Space Initiative (CSI) is Columbia’s largest engineering club, home to over 250 active members working on 13 projects related to space science, engineering, and policy. In the past year, CSI members have launched a custom-built nitrous-paraffin hybrid rocket; studied the effects of microgravity on astronauts in a parabolic flight experiment; competed nationally in five NASA competitions; designed and built two satellites funded to launch by 2027; launched high-altitude balloons to the edge of space; constructed an autonomous boat to mitigate algae blooms in NYC; taught space-themed STEM lessons to over 1,000 students; published two papers; presented at five conferences; and much, much more. CSI also hosted a live call with the International Space Station, welcomed a former director of NASA, the youngest-ever NASA flight director, the head of life support at the ESA, and an astronaut to campus, and expanded professional opportunities in aerospace across Columbia.
