Award Recognition

Principled Action
Senior Marshal
Toby Tan CC’25 is being recognized for his commitment and contributions toward principled action via his involvement as a resident adviser (RA), crew chief for Columbia University Emergency Medical Service (CUEMS), student-athlete and advocate for the Burmese-American community. Through his role as an RA, Tan mentored new RAs on how to support, uplift and advocate for residents during their times of need. As a crew chief for CUEMS, he trained new EMTs and consistently led teams through adverse medical emergencies, instilling the values of being a proper patient provider. As a thrower on the track and field team, Tan has balanced the responsibilities of being a student-athlete and advised many underclassmen peers in finding solutions and solace in being an Ivy League competitor. As a Burmese-American, Tan has consistently given back to the community, creating opportunities for new immigrants to learn and adapt to life in a new world.
Being the son of two hard-working blue-collar immigrants, I want to thank my parents for their love and support. None of this would be possible without their sacrifices and encouragement. And to my wonderful partner, Joy, thank you for always believing in me and showing me that greatness is just an opportunity away. Additionally, I want to thank the rest of my family, friends, coaches and mentors. I love you all!
