Emily Jo Lynn Phillips CC’26 is a junior studying neuroscience and behavior. As a board member of the American Medical Student Association, she creates programming aimed at making healthcare careers more accessible to her peers, exhibiting a commitment to the reduction of social inequity in the healthcare sector. Additionally, through Columbia Global Health Equity and Medicine, Phillips traveled to Uganda and worked with the women-led NGO GWED-G, providing psychosocial and prenatal support for pregnant women living with HIV in war-affected rural communities. Phillips’ interests in infectious disease and maternal health have led her to research. At the Mailliard Lab, she studied how to optimize the therapeutic success of a first-of-its-kind vaccine for achieving long-term suppression of HIV without lifelong adherence to medication. Currently, Phillips researches at the Lugo Lab, studying how adversity is transmitted across generations in Latine communities of NYC by examining sleep health during pregnancy and infant neurodevelopment.
I want to extend my utmost appreciation to my family and friends for their unwavering support. To my parents and sisters, thank you for always reminding me to take up space. To Tommy, and to Elisha, thank you for seeing me better than anyone could. To my fellow first-generation and rural students, we deserve to be in spaces such as these. Anything is possible for us.
