Award Recognition

Senior Marshal
Minju O’Rourke SEAS’25 is graduating with a degree in mechanical engineering. Recognized as a senior marshal, she spent her four years at Columbia thoughtfully engaging with Columbia’s central principle of Engineering for Humanity. O’Rourke served as the co-president of the Columbia Space Initiative, the University’s largest engineering club. She was named as a 2024 Brooke Owens Fellow, a national recognition for distinguished female aerospace engineers. Working to bridge engineering with the human world, O’Rourke was the recipient of the Climate School’s 2023 Collaborative Research Grant for her self-started project to build systems to monitor toxic algae blooms in Morningside Park. She was an avid participant in the Core and in the humanities, with coursework spanning the disciplines of history, sociology, philosophy, urban studies, and ethnicity and race studies. Outside of Columbia, O’Rourke volunteered as a gardener with the Friends of Morningside Park, and within the emergency room at New York Presbyterian Hospital.
It has been an absolute privilege to be gifted such spectacular knowledge, experiences and mentorship at Columbia. I am particularly grateful for the friendship and guidance of Tycho Bogdanowitsch SEAS’26 and Matthew Werneken SEAS’25, CC’25, among many others. Even within the darkest moments of Columbia’s recent history, our campus has provided me with the opportunity to deeply learn, to critically think and with the passion and inspiration to fight to build a better world, for all.
