Ashwin Marathe CC’25 is a senior studying history and political science. His interest in social justice began as a Laidlaw Scholar and Research Fellow for the Eric H. Holder Jr. Initiative, where he researched the farmers’ protests in India and university efforts to enact caste protections. His interests in criminal legal reform began at the Columbia Justice Lab, where he traveled to Mabel Bassett Correctional Facility in Shawnee, Okla., to speak with incarcerated women and learn about the challenges of prison life and the lack of local community support in Oklahoma. Marathe continued this interest as an intern at Northeast Legal Aid, serving clients facing housing eviction and discrimination in public spaces. This year, he works at Sivin, Miller & Roche LLP, where he works on police misconduct and correctional officer abuse cases, helping clients with excessive force claims. Marathe is dedicated to criminal legal reform and improving conditions for incarcerated individuals.
I am grateful for my family, friends and professors for making Columbia a second home, both socially and intellectually. Thank you for always encouraging me to pursue my interests freely.
