Civic Responsibility
Sebastian Javadpoor CC’25 is studying political science and psychology. As the only three-term E-board member of the Columbia Democrats, Javadpoor has consistently pushed for dialogue across the entire political spectrum — whether through getting Senator Kamala Harris (D-Ca.) to speak at Barnard or hosting a debate with the College Republicans. Outside of campus, Javadpoor has worked at the office of the New York State Attorney General for two years, where he now serves as the executive assistant to Tish James. Above all, Javadpoor is passionate about ensuring the well-being of the Columbia community. From discussions with campus administrators on protecting Middle Eastern students to leading orientation leaders as a crew captain during NSOP, he has sought to give back to the university that brought him to where he is today. Unwilling to give up the Pantone 292, Javadpoor will continue to study at Columbia for a master’s degree in political science.
I am forever grateful to my friends, family and professors who have shown me endless support throughout my most difficult times. I am also thankful for the hundreds of students here who have continuously put their safety at risk to fight oppression, discrimination and violence. Activism and defiance are woven into Columbia’s history, and I will always cherish the bravery of my peers who continue that tradition today.
