Community Building
Layla Hussein CC’26, a junior majoring in urban studies/education with a minor in ethnicity and race studies, embodies community through her dynamic leadership and creative spirit, whether it be building community through her passions for communications or the performing arts. As the communications coordinator for NSOP 2024, Hussein led all media efforts to shape a joyous, welcoming tone for NSOP’s incoming class of more than 2,000 first-years. Additionally, as a previous participant of the JADE 2023 program, Hussein rose to leadership as a program leader this year, leading a cohort of more than 20 first-years to teach web development and plan engaging night activities. In addition to being a student coordinator at CSER and a board member of the Student of Color Advisory Board, Hussein also leads ONYX as their artistic director, building a community of more than 25 dancers through teaching hip-hop choreography every week. She energizes campus life as a campus ambassador for Warner Bros. Television Group and Figma, hosting TV premieres and design workshops.
Thank you to my friends at Columbia who bring endless joy and laughter to my life. I couldn't be recognized for community building without the communities on campus that have shaped me.
