Shruti Verma has been selected for the Civic Responsibility award on account of her unwavering commitment to pursuing her academic passion with an eye towards good. A senior Computer Science major and Political Science minor in SEAS, Shruti has served as a leader in a variety of groups on and off of campus. As Head of Community Outreach for the Columbia Society of Women Engineers, she has organized many events to engage and inspire young girls interested in STEM fields. As Co-President of Columbia Social Entrepreneurship Group, she has coordinated partnerships with numerous social impact organizations across NYC, facilitating technical projects meant to help them carry out their missions. As writer and editor for Columbia Political Review, she wrote about problematic intersections of science/technology and public policy. She has maintained this same dedication to civic responsibility in personal projects and is committed to continue doing so in her future.
First and foremost, I would like to thank my family: my dad (Rakesh Verma), mom (Hema Verma), and younger brother (Rahul Verma). Their constant encouragement and unwavering support have served to fortify my resolve countless times throughout college. I’m also incredibly grateful to my friends as well as my professors, all of whom inspire me to grow and better myself. Finally, thank you to Columbia for being my home for the past four years!
