Innovation and Enhancement
Kalpana (Kal) Ganeshan has been a part of Columbia Space Initiative since her freshman year, starting with the NASA Micro-g NExT tool-design competition. In July 2020, Kal and her co-lead, Swati Ravi, formed an inter-school team to compete in the NASA SPOCS competition and designed an experiment to study the effects of microgravity on bacterial resistance. Kal led the team (entirely virtually due to COVID) successfully through NASA's rigorous selection process, and the team's payload was one of five chosen nationwide to fly to the International Space Station. After persevering through numerous technical challenges, the payload was launched on Space-X 24 in December 2021. Now that the payload has returned to Earth, Kal is excited to analyze the results and share the team’s work through the Citizen Science curriculum which introduces middle school students to the field of aerospace. I am truly grateful for this recognition. Leading the SPOCS team and working with faculty and students across Columbia has been extremely rewarding. A huge thank you to our advisor Mike Massimino, my co-lead Swati Ravi, and the SPOCS team for a once-in-a-lifetime experience; I have learned so much from each and every one of you. Finally, thank you to my friends and family for all of your support throughout this journey.
