Sofia is a compassionate leader being recognized for her engagement with the Office of Multicultural Affairs. As a student facilitator for ROOTED (Respecting Ourselves and Others Through Empathy and Dialogue) and Under1Roof, she leads peer dialogues that explore identity, oppression, and social responsibility. She collaborates with team members to develop curricula around topics that are meaningful to Columbia students, such as mental health, fatphobia, dating preferences, gender expression, and safety stereotypes. By modeling vulnerability and compassion, Sofia creates safe spaces where students are encouraged to challenge their prejudices and internal biases and explore individual steps they can take to advance social justice. She fosters solidarity among participants by inviting them to affirm each other’s experiences and grow together. The dialogues are collaborative environments where individuals are equipped with communication and conflict resolution skills that may help them engage with topics of identity, power, and privilege at Columbia and beyond.
Thank you to Avi Edelman and my ROOTED and Under1Roof team members. Your support has been pivotal in my journey toward exploring my identity and the power I have to encourage others to do the same. I am deeply grateful for the love and appreciation we all show for one another and will forever keep my experience with you close to my heart.
