Over the past four years, Heven Haile has advocated for change to the protocols of the Office of Public Safety on campus, laid groundwork to advance discussion about the effect of the student contribution on low-income students, and dedicated time to transforming mental health services to better support students from underrepresented and marginalized backgrounds on campus. Heven’s work throughout the University Senate and Columbia College Student Council has always been concerned with the needs of the students that are often left behind and left out of discussions. Heven continued to push for further conversations and engage students in discussion about what police and prison abolition could be. It is no doubt that Heven’s actions over the last four years will leave a lasting impact at Columbia.
