Robert D. Lilley Award for Socially Responsible Engineering
The Columbia University Engineers Without Borders (CU-EWB) Uganda Program has been awarded the Robert D. Lilley Award for Socially Responsible Engineering for their current project expanding a solar powered microgrid in the rural community of Otubet, Uganda. The expansion project addresses multiple current community concerns, including providing electricity to eleven more businesses at the Odelel Trading Post, allowing lights to be sustained for ten consecutive hours each day, and installing a medical grade refrigerator at the medical center. Their work on the engineering project and with the community to ensure sustainability of the grid embodies the principle of 'Engineering for Humanity'.
