Principled Action
Ben Helscher, a Columbia College Junior, served as a co-coordinator of Under1Roof, a required NSOP program that creates a dialogue-based space centering identity, social responsibility, and community building. As a student leader for the program, a key supporter of facilitator training, and a student facilitator of difficult dialogues among first-year students, Ben makes an active effort to be conscious of his many positions of privilege amidst racial unrest across the globe, continued anti-Black violence, and surges of activism against social, racial, and economic injustices. As a cis white student, he is vigilant in drawing attention to Black and POC voices (especially Black women and queer and trans Black people), complicating conversations with fellow white facilitators about complicity in racist systems, holding himself accountable for his privilege, and modeling active allyship.
Thank you to the Office of Multicultural Affairs, Melinda Aquino, Avi Edelman, and my co-coordinator Amari Gaiter for their tireless efforts in developing the Under1Roof curriculum and their devoted support for the program and its facilitators.
