Award Recognition

Community Building
Senior Marshal
Collins Mokua is being recognized for his various contributions to the Black community at Columbia. As an active and executive board member of many student groups, including the African Students Association, Charles Drew Premedical Society, and Black Pre-Professional Society, he dedicated his time to creating spaces and programming that fosters community and inclusion within the black community. He has been described as, 'the glue that holds the community together' both inside and outside of the classroom. He is a mentor for STRIVE and You Can Too Inc, organizations that service middle- and high-schoolers with sickle-cell disease, where he helped mentees get accepted into college.
I am thankful to my friends, peers, teachers, the selection committee, and greatly honored to be receiving this phenomenal award. Serving the Columbia community has been my greatest pleasure. A product of the same kind of support and opportunity, I stand convicted in the power of education and mentorship. This is but the first step in the journey of uplifting our communities, congratulations to us, class of 2021!
