Senior Marshal
Leonard A. Pullman Memorial Prize
Asatta Mesa is recognized for her unrelenting desire to positively impact the communities she is passionate about, and for encouraging her peers to do the same. Serving as one of six students on the Committee on the Second Century of the Core, Asatta leverages her own experiences in the Core Curriculum to provide insight into how this essential component of a Columbia College undergraduate education should diversify and be more inclusive for the next century. This past summer, Asatta developed and led a presentation to educate members of the Kappa Alpha Theta Epsilon Upsilon chapter about police brutality, the history of institutional racism in the United States, and the historic evolution of policing and 'tough-on-crime' policies. Asatta co-founded the Columbia University Black Finance Group (CUBFG) and has mentored BIPOC students interested in pursuing careers in finance. Asatta is also the recipient of the Leonard A. Pullman Memorial Prize.
I am eternally grateful to my family for supporting my education, for teaching me empathy, faith, resilience, and for uplifting me in times when I've struggled to uplift myself. Thank you to the friends, peers, administrators and staff members who've extended me kindness and served as sources of inspiration throughout my Columbia journey. Finally, thank you to my professors, especially Professor Judith Russell, for encouraging me to be a more passionate and critical thinker.
