Indelible Mark
Senior Marshal
School of Engineering and Applied Science Student Activities Award
Virginia Jiang is leaving an indelible mark within the Columbia Engineering community as well as within the larger undergraduate LGBTQ community. For most of their time at Columbia, Virginia has been the President of Columbia Queer & Asian, a board member of the Queer & Trans Advisory Board within Multicultural Affairs, and the Community Organizer for the Intercultural Resource Center. Virginia is leaving behind a greater sense of community, commitment, and has been a mentor and individual to whom incoming and newer students look up to. Within QTAB they have been instrumental in the creation of the 2018 LGBTQ Student Survey, QSplash, Queer & Trans Health & Wellness Guide. Virginia's dedication to leaving a better community behind for students who will be coming in after they are gone is one of their best qualities. Virginia is also the recipient of the School of Engineering and Applied Science Student Activities Award.
Thank you so much for these three awards. I am truly grateful towards all of my mentors at Columbia University, especially my PI Prof. Scott Banta and my Associate Director of Multicultural Affairs & LGBTQ Outreach Vanessa Gonzalez-Siegel. I have been able to make the most of my time at Columbia because of their dedication and their unyielding belief in the strength of my work. Thank you to everyone who supported me on my journey, especially all of my family members and my cat Smudge, who dutifully attended 2.5 semesters of remote chemical engineering classes with me.
