Amari Gaiter has made an impact on Columbia starting from her very first year. As an Under1Roof facilitator, she quickly established herself as an adept conversation leader through her welcoming demeanor, her confident presence, and her ability to ease participants into conversations about subjects that are often taboo. She also made amazing contributions to ROOTED (Respecting Ourselves & Others through Empathy & Dialogue). Amari has designed programs on topics such as identity and mental health, internalized oppression, and understanding power/privilege. She also went above and beyond in taking a leadership role in marketing the program and bringing in new participants. Extending her dedication to social justice off campus, Amari also passionately serves as a coordinator in Farm2Power, a mutual aid organization that uplifts BIPOC farmers and provides food support to the Los Angeles community. Amari is also the recipient of the Richard H. Fox Memorial Prize.
Thank you for selecting me as the recipient of the Richard H. Fox Memorial Prize and the Indelible Mark award! I sincerely hope that the programs I have worked on and helped to develop alongside my peers will leave lasting impacts on the Columbia community for the better. I am forever grateful for my mentors as well as the meaningful relationships I cultivated through this work. Thank you again, and I look forward to continuing my advocacy for social justice post-graduation with these experiences in my heart.
