The theme of the evening has been freedom, its processes and struggles and joys, whether iterated in the poetry-music of Scriabin and Beethoven or in the great escape from darkness and injustice that is Fidelio, Beethoven's only opera. The centerpiece of the show was Fidelio, flanked by choral preludes that speak of related themes, and two postludes, overatures that Beethoven ended up not using in the final version of his opera (which was revised and revised multiple times between 1804 and 1814).

This edition of Afternoon Classical features Gli uccelli, by Respighi, also known as Bird Song, as we explore a Spring themed repertoire. As the rain throughout Manhattan today continues to remind us of the conflict between a Winter's past and Spring's awakening, we'll explore the world of the Rachmaninoff Vespers and their profound dissonance. This thematic tension will take us into our beloved Bach "Hour," which runs for the remainder of the show, from 4:30pm to 6pm. Join me again on Friday April 26th at 3PM for another exciting edition of Afternoon Classical.

Yours in Rachmaninoff,
