Booker Little's Complete Known Recordings: Part 1.
Today marks the 50th memorial anniversary for Booker Little (4/2/138-10/5/1961). Music from a few interpolations of Max Roach + 4 from June to Fall of 1958 featuring the quintet in-studio, at Newport Jazz Festival 1958, and on two television broadcasts: ABC's "Stars of Jazz," and the National Church Association of America's 1958 program "Look Up and Live".
This edition of Afternoon Classical we explore the progeny of Mozart symphonic works, as contrasted by the infusion of Dvorak's romanticism in his 4th Symphony. We ask: how does the landscape exert influence into the work of the composer? Mozart's Linz symphony, composed while Mozart was out of Vienna shares resemblance to the composer's early works composed in Vienna.
Michael Attias joined us in the studio to discuss his newest leader release, "Spun Tree", now out on Clean Feed. The quintet on that recording will be performing tomorrow evening at 8pm at Greenwich House Music School. We also heard a digital version of a live performance from the great Marion Brown, recorded at Soundscape over 30 years ago.
