Today's subject was Lionel Hampton, legendary jazz vibraphonist. The show surveyed his early work as percussionist and vibraphonist in big bands, through his playing in Benny Goodman's small groups, to his career as bandleader and frequent collaborator.
The subject of today's profile was Charles Tolliver, trumpeter, composer, arranger, bandleader, and co-founder of Strata-East, one of the first artist-owned labels in jazz. This survey of his music passed from his early sides with Jackie McLean and the Gerald Wilson Orchestra to his big-band arrangements as leader of Music Inc. in the 70's.
This edition of Jazz Profiles featured the music of composer and pianist Randy Weston (b. 1926). We heard from Weston as a leader beginning with his earliest small group recordings, then through live festival dates, large ensemble pieces arranged by collaborator Melba Liston, and solo piano recordings.
The subject of this date's Jazz Profile was Pierre Michelot (1928-2005), bass player, lifelong Paris resident, instrumental partner to Kenny Clarke, and the bass man of repute for all visiting American horn players and pianists who traveled to France after the war until the early 60's.
