Crew Chiefs are a critical link between the Orientation Leaders and the Orientation Committee, and assist in training Orientation Leaders, generating program ideas, coordinating crews' coverage of events, leading walking tours and working on school-specific events. Crew Chiefs with interests in programs for particular student interests (African American, Asian/Pacific, Bisexual/ Gay/ Lesbian, Commuter, Latino, Religious, South Asian, Students with disabilities, and Transfers) may be asked to work on programs in these areas.
Most of a Crew Chief's time is spent leading a crew of approximately ten Orientation Leaders and ensuring that his or her crew completes its assignments (setting up, running, and cleaning up events) during orientation. Crew Chiefs return to campus one week before orientation for training and final preparations. Early housing will be provided.
Applications are available before Spring Break of each school year. Watch for updates at the NSOP website.
NSOP Orientation Leaders
Orientation Leaders welcome new students and ease their adjustment to Barnard and Columbia. Additionally, as members of orientation crews, they help implement orientation programs by fulfilling crew assignments, for which they must be available throughout orientation. The following are a list of the responsibilities of an Orientation Leader:
Participate fully in training sessions, including an introductory meeting in the spring and training during the three days immediately preceding orientation.
Fulfill all responsibilities within your crew including setting up, running, and breaking down all assigned events and helping new students move into their rooms.
Develop relationships and serve as a resource for new students in your orientation group. This will be done by communicating with new students through the summer as well as throughout orientation by escorting them to events and conducting orientation group meetings as necessary.
Participate in all activities during orientation.
Applications are available after Spring Break each year. Watch for updates at the NSOP website.
