Carman is one of the only residence halls on campus exclusively available to first-year students. Residents of Carman find its location convenient for accessing many of Columbia's resources. The building consists of 13 floors, divided into approximately 13 single-sex suites per floor. These suites each contain one bathroom and two double-occupancy rooms. In addition, Carman has one communal kitchen in the basement, a large social lounge, and laundry facilities as well as a computer lab on the first floor. Carman also houses the Fellowships Office, and a satellite office for Counseling and Psychological Services.
