Stephanie was born in Massachusetts, but spent most of her childhood on Long Island and in Rochester, N.Y. She holds a B.A., magna cum laude, in religion from Columbia College and a Ph.D. in religious studies from Northwestern University, where she taught classes on religion and American culture. Prior to her time as an advising dean, Stephanie worked with M.A. and Ph.D. students at Columbia’s Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and for the Office of Fellowships at the Social Science Research Council. In her spare time, she enjoys practicing yoga, playing tennis and hiking in Inwood Hill Park.
