A Message from Residential Programs

Residential Programs is staffed with 141 undergraduate students, 16 graduate, and 9 professional staff who live in the residence halls and work to support you throughout your Columbia experience.  You can expect our warm welcome as you move into your residence hall and our continued presence as you transition to college life.

We understand that college is a time of self-discovery and defining, or redefining, your identity.  We want and encourage you to experience new situations, open yourself to new perspectives, and deepen your understanding of others.  We offer programs to allow you to meet new people, experience new adventures, and enhance connections.

Here are some ways to anticipate our outreach:

  • You will learn about opportunities to get involved with RHLO (Residence Hall Leadership Organization), an inter-hall programming and community board
  • Your Resident Adviser (RA) will schedule a one-on-one conversation (we refer to these as “connect” conversations) with you in the first few weeks to learn more about you in an attempt to ensure you are aware of all that Columbia has to offer given your interests and experiences
  • Programs.  Programs.  Programs.  We will offer opportunities out of the classroom for learning, leadership, connection and involvement via RAs (floor programs), Community Advisers (building-wide programs), Faculty in Residence, Dean in Residence Alumni Series, Special Interest Communities and Fraternity and Sorority Life.

While we will encourage your active involvement, you decide whether or not to take advantage of all the Columbia residential experience has to offer.

It’s also important to note our role as educators outside of the classroom.  At your first community meeting hosted by your RA on move-in night, you will have the chance to meet the members of your floor and you will learn about our expectations and your responsibilities.  We encourage you to make smart, safe and responsible decisions as we will hold you accountable for behaviors and actions that are not aligned with our community values (hint:  read University policy, your respective Bulletin- CC or SEAS, and the Columbia Housing Guide to Living).

We all make mistakes or have momentary lapses of our best judgment.  In this process of education and learning- if you do behave in a way that is not aligned with our values, we expect honesty and integrity as we determine appropriate follow-up.

Enjoy these next few weeks, wherever you are, as you prepare to embrace all that Columbia has to offer.  We are thrilled you have chosen our community and look forward to living and learning, together, upon your arrival!
