2015 Common Application for Pre-orientation Programs

During the week prior to Orientation, first-year Columbia College and Columbia Engineering students may apply to participate in one of our three pre-orientation programs:

  • Columbia Outdoor Orientation Program (COÖP - pronounced "coh-op")
  • Columbia Urban Experience (CUE) - Barnard College and General Studies/Jewish Theological Seminary Joint Program students may apply
  • International Student Orientation Program (ISOP)

All programs are amazing opportunities to meet other first-year students and share in a common experience. Use the Common Application below to apply to any or all of the Columbia pre-orientation programs before June 4, 2015, by 11:59 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time.

Columbia Outdoor Orientation Program (COÖP)

The Columbia Outdoor Orientation Program (affectionately pronounced "coh-op") is a pre-orientation program for first-year students in Columbia College (CC) and The Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS). All incoming CC/SEAS first year students can apply to participate in COÖP regardless of past camping, biking, hiking, or canoeing experience. The total cost of the program is $400. Check the COÖP webpage for more information about this unique opportunity to meet other first-years and form close friendships, all before orientation begins! Participation will be deciding using on a lottery system.

Columbia Urban Experience (CUE)

CUE is a pre-orientation program offering newly admitted students from Barnard College, Columbia College, General Studies/Jewish Theological Seminary Joint Program and The Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science the opportunity to engage in community service throughout the city before classes begin in September. First-year students engage in thoughtful dinner discussions and participate in Night Activities that include poetry slams, desserts at local cafes, visits to museums, rooftop movies, jazz concerts, and much more. Participants in CUE form long lasting friendships and continue to contribute to the program through graduation. The total cost of the program is $350. For more information, visit the CUE webpage. Participants will be selected based on the strength of their application.

International Student Orientation Program (ISOP)

The International Student Orientation Program is designed to help international students comfortably transition into the Columbia University community before the New Student Orientation Program week. Combining informational events, exciting city outings, and tight-knit mentoring with program leaders, pre-orientation gives students the opportunity to fully explore and understand their new home while taking care of basic necessities needed for a comfortable undergraduate experience. The total cost of the program is $50.00. Acceptance is based on both the number of applications and application content.

Personal Information
Program Selection
Please indicate your first, second. and third program choice below. If you do not have a second or third choice, please select "n/a."
Columbia Outdoor Orientation Program (COÖP)
Please keep in mind that at least half of all participants in COÖP have never had any outdoor experience and that all our leaders are trained outdoorsmen/women. All that is required for a successful COÖP experience is a lot of enthusiasm and helpful hands! On a scale of one to five (where a five means you could climb Mt. Everest blindfolded and one means that you have never left your couch), how would you rank your level of comfort in the outdoors and your athletic ability?
Columbia Urban Experience (CUE)
CUE is open to first-year students from Barnard College, Columbia College, Columbia Engineering, and General Studies/Jewish Theological Seminary Joint Program students. We encourage applicants to demonstrate why they would be a good fit for the program, candidly and thoroughly. All applicants will find out their application decision by the end of June. When you upload your file, please use your full name as part of the file name.
Please discuss how they relate to your personal experiences.
