Class Day and Commencement

University Commencement & Class Day

All graduates are invited to participate in both University Commencement and their school's Class Day ceremony. University Commencement celebrates graduates from all Columbia University schools and affiliates. Each school dean will speak during the ceremony, and President Bollinger will confer degrees to the graduates from each school en masse. Tickets are required for guests, and the number available to each graduate is set in the spring, once the total number of graduates is known. For the ceremony in May 2017, undergraduates may bring up to four (4) guests; graduate students may bring up to three (3) guests.

Class Day is a school-specific ceremony. Attendees will enjoy remarks by the school's dean and other administrators, student leaders, and a keynote speaker. The ceremony will also include the presentation of awards and the reading of names. When a student's name is read aloud, he or she will cross the stage, shake hands with the school dean, and receive a class pin.
