Democracy and Education December 2nd, 2016 9am-6:30pm Faculty House Are American schools educating citizens? How are civic engagement programs reshaping liberal arts education? What are the public responsibilities of colleges and universities? On the centennial of John Dewey's classic Democracy and Education (1916), Columbia's Center for American Studies is sponsoring a day-long conference that will consider Dewey's legacy for twenty-first century civic education. Lectures and sessions will examine contemporary debates about educational policy, civic engagement programs, education and equality, access to higher education, and the public responsibilities of colleges and universities, among other topics.
