The Department of Middle Eastern, South Asian, and African Languages

Fall course offering

MDES W2030

There’s still time to register for this exciting lecture course taught by
Prof. Mahmood Mamdani.

This course focuses on key debates that have shaped the study of Africa in the postcolonial African academy. We will cover six key debates: (a) history before external impact; (b) agency and responsibility in different kinds of slave trade; (c) sate formation (conquest, slavery, colonialism); (d) underdevelopment (colonialism and globalization); (e) nationalism and the anti-colonial struggle; (f) pan-Africanism and globalization. The approach is multidisciplinary and readings will be illustrative of different sides in the debate.

Previously offered as ANTH V2010, MDES W2030 fulfills the
Global Core requirement.

MDES W2030 takes place on Mondays and Wednesdays from 11:40am-12:55pm.
