For the Fall 2012 semester, there will be one section of University Writing geared specifically toward English Language Learners (non-native speakers of English) who wish to focus more specifically on issues of second-language acquisition and adjusting to a new academic culture.
Persian has been the language of courts, poets, and scholars and lingua franca of the Eastern part of the Islamic world from the ninth century (C.E.) onward. It is the official language of Iran and it is spoken and understood in various areas of Afghanistan, India, Pakistan, and Tajikistan today.
For first-year students interested in biology and/or medicine:

This is a great way to become familiar with the types of research going on at Columbia University and to find a lab to do research in.
